Musing Monday is hosted over at Should Be Reading.

Musing Mondays asks you to muse about one of the following each week…

• Describe one of your reading habits.
• Tell us what book(s) you recently bought for yourself or someone else, and why you chose that/those book(s).
• Tell us what you’re reading right now — what you think of it, so far; why you chose it; what you are (or, aren’t) enjoying it.
• Do you have a bookish rant? Something about books or reading (or the industry) that gets your ire up? Share it with us!
• Instead of the above questions, maybe you just want to ramble on about something else pertaining to books — let’s hear it, then!

My Musing this week is about one of my current reads I am reading the first book in The Vampire Academy . I gave into curiosity and peer pressure. I am not sure if I like it yet or not. I am 87 pages in and have not really felt a connection with either of the main characters. That said I am digging Dmitri the Russian Guardian.

So my muse is do you keep going with a book that your not sure you will like. I don’t dislike the book but I just feel no connection yet, how long do you stick with a book until you set it aside?

  1. oh, I try never to let what others are reading make me read a book..or keep reading if I am not loving it

  2. I hate when I don’t feel a connection right away. I usually give a book at least 100 pages…and then, all bets are off.

  3. Everyone raved about VA and I didn’t start loving it until book 4. But by the time I finished the series, I LOVED it. The first couple of books are sort of.. meh.
My advice is to keep reading because the series gets amazing. I warn people all the time not to give up after or during book #1.

I usually only give up on books I don’t like if no one else is really raving about it. I’ll try harder if the book comes recommended by people or other bloggers. It all depends on my TBR pile, too. Sometimes, I just don’t have the time to keep trying and I have to call it quits. This is a relatively new technique for me since before book blogging, I always finished a book no matter what. But with more books to read, I have less time to waste on books that just don’t hook me.
Keep reading, though. I promise the series is worth reading even if it doesnt seem that way right now!

  4. Like Megan I didn’t start putting books aside until after I started blogging. I had a kind of finish at all costs approach. Sometimes I persist though if I’m a fair way in. Usually ill give a book around 50-100 pages before I decide. Here’s my MM: http://daystarz.wordpress.com/2013/03/18/musing-mondays-march-18/
